NEXT CLINIC: Knot Tying, evening of April 11, Manhattan

We’ll review some knots most people forget, and make sure you know how to tie them right.  Then, we’ll learn new ones.

We’ll even make sure you know the details of how to close the knots properly, which is almost more important than how they’re formed in the first place!

Here’s the lineup…

  • Figure 8
  • Stevedore
  • Bowline
  • Rolling Hitch
  • Round Turn & 2 Half Hitches
  • Sheet Bend
  • Square/Reef knot
  • Cleat Hitch
  • Making things slippery
If there’s time, we’ll learn a basic eye splice with 3-strand rope!

We include a horn cleat on a board so you can practice that cleat hitch, and you take that  – and some practice rope – home.

If this doesn’t get you tongue-tied with excitement for the sailing season, you need to check your pulse.  Seriously.
Time: 7-9pm
Clinic fee: $65
Location: Upper West Side

In addition to our full certification courses, we have the following shorter clinics:

Performance Sailing/Heavy Weather.  We go out in almost anything – light & variable to Victory at Sea.  Focus on sail shape, balance, boat handling, crew placement, etc.

Nav ‘App’ Clinic.  Apply your classroom or rusty on-water navigation skills with us on a cruising sailboat such as our Pearson 10M.  See how quickly (or not) you can plot those GPS coordinates or a good ‘ol fashioned 3-bearing fix.

3-hour Intro to Sailing.  Get a flavor of what sailing and sailing school is like.   If you like it, upgrade before you leave to our full learn-to-sail course, Start Sailing, and we’ll deduct your full 3-hour fee!  Upgrade later and we’ll take half of it off.

1-day Intro /Refresher.  For those who want a more complete experience, or have a fair amount but need a solid refresher.  Upgrade before you leave and we’ll take half the fee off.

Next Schedule: October 19.  Get a solid introduction to how sailing works, and the basic skills used for everything from little kids dinghies to the America’s Cup, Volvo Ocean Race, the Olympics, and fun cruising.  $175.  If you decide to do the full course afterward, you’ll get $100 of the tuition!

Marine Radar.  A few evenings or two afternoons learning about how radar works, and using simulating software to get a real feel for navigating by radar and also collision avoidance.

Knot Tying.  An afternoon or evening going over some standards and some you’ve probably never heard of.

Clinics are announced via our eNewsletter, Tidings, and in our Blog (rants) posts.  You can subscribe to either or both from any page or post on this site.
